Apples on Linen: After Carol Marine
Master Copy Study in Preparation for My Carol Marine Workshop
This piece, Apples on Linen: After Carol Marine, is a master copy created as part of my preparation for Carol Marine’s workshop in Portland this May.
Painted from a bird’s-eye view, the composition features three yellow apples resting casually on a folded napkin—an everyday moment made luminous through painterly brushwork and warm light. I was drawn to the simplicity of the subject, the strong shapes, and the subtle variations in color and shadow that Carol captures so beautifully in her original.
This study challenged me to paint more decisively—focusing on value, edge, and color temperature rather than detail. It’s a reminder that even the most ordinary objects can hold quiet elegance when viewed through the right lens.
Creating this piece has deepened my appreciation for Carol’s work and inspired me to keep exploring the power of simplicity in still life.
